No matter the economy, luxury will always find a way to thrive (at least among the world's mega-rich). Understanding the luxe industry requires a precise knowledge of both established brands and up-and-coming trendsetters.
The style spies
Men stumped by a bewildering range of fashion choices now have an army of bloggers on the inside to lend a helping hand.

Monitoring the markets and working in the office all day leaves little time for a professional working man to stay in style. Yes, nipping off to a newsstand and buying a fashion magazine to read is an option. However male fashion fans are finding it’s much easier to visit their favourite websites, and get instant help from a willing army of fashion bloggers, who act as style spies.
Two years ago, before Bryanboy, Scott Schuman, Tommy Ton and other fashion bloggers made their major appearances on the web, a gentleman needed to spend time reading fashion magazines to discover up and coming trends. Today, men can quickly scan fashion blogs that immediately reveal the very latest in fashion. Fashion bloggers update their blogs frequently with practical information that is supplemented photographs and illustrated advice, from which hungry readers receive fresh inspiration and the tools to reinvent their own style.
While fashion magazines tend to promote the latest designer labels, as seen on runways around the world, these are expensive and often not wearable. Blogs focus on the practical – men’s fashion on the streets, as discussed in online circles, reflect what people really want and need.
Scott Schuman of The Sartorialist and Tommy Ton of JAK & JIL made their debut by taking photos on the streets in New York, Paris, Milan and other fashionable cities. They often capture gentlemen wearing chic summer outfits, refined business suits and detailed pieces. Visitors get details on street styles that are currently being worn and are exposed to special attention on details; a hem of a trouser or back dart on a shirt, for example. Christophe Wong, an award-winning Hong Kong based fashion designer, is one of many who takes inspiration from these blogs. “I started to take a real look at pocket-handkerchiefs and Italian shoes in shops after seeing the pictures in The Sartorialist,” he says.
Aside from street fashion images, various fashion blogs serve different purposes. PUT this ON and A Suitable Wardrobe for example, give concrete information on selecting fine menswear products. PUT this ON offers practical advice in posts such as “Business Casual Basic”, “Black Tie” and “Shoes”, that act as veritable fashion bibles. These blogs give men valuable tips on how to choose the right clothes according to their build and size – because nobody likes a loose-fitting suit.
Jill Telford, CEO for Synovate in the UK and fashion and retail researcher says: “Such tips and advice will be invaluable to many men who need practical help in dressing for different occasions and don’t necessarily know how to put a great outfit together, whether that be smart, casual or somewhere in between. The language of fashion and dress codes is confusing to many and so whatever can help men to cut through that and know how to look good and appropriate is a god send.”
Mixing and matching can be painful before your morning coffee. Not anymore, thanks to the fashion bloggers such as Street Etiquette and What Is James Wearing? Mixing and matching clothes is made easier because they feature their own unique styling using a vast range of clothes. It is easy to get inspiration from these blogs and create your style using the clothes in your wardrobe.
Men don’t need to have master styling skills to stay in style. With a few tips from fashion blogs, everyone can stay in vogue in clever ways. Bookmark some of your favourite blogs, and then you won’t need to wear the same shirt with the same trousers and bore your colleagues every day.
