And the winner is... Paris! (According to Singaporeans)
5 July 2005
If Singaporeans were choosing the Host City of the 2012 Olympic Games the winner would be Paris according to a survey released today by leading global market research company, Synovate.
Sietske Wouda, Associate Director, Online Panel for Synovate in Asia Pacific, said that 41% of Singaporeans believed Paris deserved to win the right to host the 2012 Olympic Games.
The survey was conducted online over the last four days so we know this reflects the latest thinking amongst Singaporeans.
"Of course we are not the ones making the decision. But with 87% of all Singaporeans aware of the IOC Host City meeting in town this week, it's fair to say we are following proceedings with great interest," she said.
The survey asked respondents to name the city that would win and also the city that deserved to win.
In a show of confidence that the decision will be made on merit, Singaporeans believe that Paris will win (43%) and also deserves to win (41%).
But while most prefer Paris, 21% believe London is the right choice for hosting the Greatest Show on Earth with remaining votes split fairly evenly across Madrid (15%), New York (12%) and Moscow (12%).
"As the Candidate Cities' charm offensive reaches fever pitch this week, it will be interesting to see if Singaporeans have picked the outcome," Ms Wouda said.
Respondents were also asked about Singapore's chances of hosting an Olympic Games in the future.
The Lion City is taking on more and more big events and proving itself an exciting venue with world-class infrastructure - with this week's meeting a prime example. So we wanted to find out if Singapore feels ready to take on the biggest event of them all.
When asked if Singapore is capable of hosting a Summer Olympic Games, 51% of respondents said yes. Taking it a step further, we also asked if Singapore should bid for the 2016 Olympic Games and this time 48% of respondents agreed the city state should throw its hat into the ring.
"A key ingredient for a successful bid is a clear mandate from the residents of the Candidate City. If Singapore were to go down this path in the future, we are half way there. There's a strong support base but 52% would need some persuading. Perhaps the excitement of this week's events will build their enthusiasm," she said.
More about the survey
The Olympic Host City survey was conducted from 30 June to 4 July 2005 using Synovate ViewsNet - an online panel. The respondents were Singapore residents aged 15 and above and the data was weighted to reflect the profile of online users in Singapore.
