"Dome shape" design for new national stadium, say Singaporeans
19 December 2007
SINGAPORE — More than one quarter (31%) of Singaporeans said they prefer a stadium shaped like a dome while 22% of respondents said that the new national stadium within Singapore's upcoming Sports Hub should be wrapped in translucent fabric, according to a survey by global market research company Synovate.
Following the submission of three proposed designs to the Singapore Sports Council by the Singapore Sports Hub Group, Alpine Myreder and Singapore Gold, Synovate surveyed 1,013 Singaporeans between the ages of 18 to 64 in a bid to discover design preferences for Singapore's new National Stadium.
"The dome shape design, submitted by the Singapore Sports Hub Group continues to be the leading choice among Singaporeans partly because it reflects conventionalism and is easily recognised as it is used in other iconic stadiums throughout the world," said Ms Miranda Cheung, Managing Director of Synovate Singapore.
"Interestingly enough, we also discovered that nearly one quarter (22%) of respondents were unaware of the three designs that were submitted this year, proving that more awareness for the new stadium and upcoming Sport Hub is needed," she added.
The survey also found that sixteen percent of respondents favored Singapore Gold's 'horse shoe' stadium design. The winning design is expected to be announced in January 2008 by the Singapore Sports Council and Ministry of Community Development, Youth and Sports.
